How to verify the authenticity of NSF water filtration product certification?

Water purifier manufacturers often highlight their products by claiming that their water purifiers, filter cartridges, or parts are NSF-certified. This association with NSF, which many are familiar with, involves significant costs — around $30,000 to $80,000 for initial product certification, plus an annual fee of over $6,000 per product to the NSF Foundation. It’s no wonder “NSF certification” is used as a marketing highlight.

Because of this certification, consumers tend to trust the products more. Some manufacturers serious about building long-term water purifier brands prioritize product quality and ensure they do not release toxins, investing heavily in NSF certification. Conversely, some manufacturers may try to save on certification and manufacturing costs (potentially resulting in products releasing toxins) by using tricks to deceive consumers. I will now share how to spot these tricks so that consumers interested in purchasing water purifiers can easily distinguish:

  1. Uploading someone else’s or a supplier’s certificate Some manufacturers might think consumers won’t know how to verify if they truly have NSF certification, so they randomly upload someone else’s or a supplier’s NSF certificate on their website. We can compare the company name on the certificate with the name of the water purifier brand to see if they match.

2.Uploading Expired Certification Certificates

After obtaining NSF certification, besides paying annual fees, the certificate is not permanently valid. Every five years, the same product requires re-application for certification, which is quite cumbersome and costly. Therefore, some manufacturers use expired certificates on shopping websites. To confirm if a manufacturer’s certificate is still valid, you can refer to the following NSF official website procedure to check if the certificate is listed on NSF’s official website.

3.When a manufacturer’s application for NSF certification is approved, the American NSF organisation will list the manufacturer’s name (company name or brand name) on their official website. However, NSF’s official website is in English. You can follow the steps below to quickly find the certified manufacturer’s name.

The registration website of NSF in the United States is

To find the name of certified manufacturers, follow these steps:

(1)First, locate the “search certified products & systems” search bar.

(2)Enter the company’s “English” name in the search bar.

(3) If the authentication name on the screen matches the name of the company whose product you intend to purchase, then it is correct.
